Thank You!!
The 4th grade team would like to send a heartfelt thank you to the endearing students, hard-working parents, and selfless volunteers who helped to make the 2013-2014 academic year a success! We are so proud of the accomplishments of our students, and are very aware that their successes are the result of the effort of our entire community--THANK YOU!!
Spelling Bee...
Yesterday's fourth grade spelling bee was a total success!! We are so proud of all of our amazing fourth graders who participated and went above and beyond by studying a very challenging list of words! It was a very close contest at the end, but our winner was Nevaeh L. from Mrs. Sims' class!! Congratulations lady! Enjoy that Target gift card :)
It's almost summer... what can I do to help my student succeed?
This is a common question that most teachers hear at the end of every school year - how can parents help their children prepare for the upcoming grade? Well, here are a few ways that you can help your student!
- The number one thing to help keep your student on track is to continue to read with them. Allowing students to read independently is also helpful, but for students who are not advanced readers, reading independently is not helping them to grow as they are not learning from their mistakes. Also, please encourage your children to pick books that are challenging, not just picture books! Challenging books will expand the mind in a new way!
- Students are expected to already have all of their multiplication facts (2's through 12's) memorized by the time they enter the 5th grade. Even if your student has passed all of their timed tests, please encourage them to practice and test them with flashcards so they keep those facts fresh in their memories! If you need a copy of multiplication flashcards, sets can be found under the "Resources By Subject" tab and can be printed from there.
- One way to keep your student's writing skills sharp is to have them keep a reading response journal! For each book that they read with or without you, they can perform activities like writing a summary, writing an alternative ending, and answering short response questions. The most important thing to focus on in terms of summer writing is that you monitor student writing, and provide feedback. Writing every day will not help if they are practicing sloppy habits, so encourage them to use the correct writing habits they have been taught in school!
- Last but not least, encourage your student to pursue educational interests!! The public library located at Fort Lupton High School is open all summer long and has many activities as well as interesting books to check out!
History Colorado Center
4th grade went on a wonderful field trip this past week to the History Colorado Center in downtown Denver. Thank you so much to all of our wonderful parent chaperones who helped to make our trip a success! Students had the opportunity to explore an 1870's schoolroom, sit in an old Model T Ford, experience the 1920s Dust Bowl, and interact with tools used by ancient Native American tribes. At the state capitol students got to see their government in action, visiting the chambers of our State Senate and exploring the dome museum! The students had a wonderful time, ch ch check it out!!
A.V.I.D. Night
Thank you so much to everyone who came to support their student at A.V.I.D. night. It was a huge success and we hope that the information received was helpful to parents considering options for their students! A.V.I.D. can be such a helpful program for students who just need that little extra push, and hearing from our A.V.I.D. student speakers was such great evidence of the impact made! Check out a few great photos!

Mrs. Jeffries' class did an experiment about dyeing eggs in vinegar, Mrs. Pevler's class did an experiment about exploding soday, Mrs. Schulte's class did an experiment about crystallizing honey, and Mrs. Sims' class did an experiment about prolonging the life of bubles. They all came out so great and there was an excellent turnout for Health and Science Night last night!! Check out just a few of our boards...

Welcome back from Spring Break!!
Welcome back from Spring Break!!
This week has been a real challenge for our little hooligans, being back in structured time all day is not easy. We have had a lot of arguing, eye-rolling, and bad attitudes from several students. Please talk to your child about what respectful behavior looks like, and the importance of being your best self at all times!
Now that TCAP is over, we are gearing up for a few other big things!! We are beginning preparation for a Science Fair project starting next week, and we have a field trip coming up in May! Here are some important dates you may need to know through the end of the year:
We are so grateful for all of the parent cooperation and support that we have received this year! Thank you all for your help, and let's finish strong!!

It's TCAP Time!!!
Well folks, it's finally here...TCAP TIME!!!
This week students have testing on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8:30 - 9:30 am, and from 1:15 - 2:15 pm.
Next week, students have testing on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8:30 - 9:30 am only.
It is imperative that students not only attend school all of these days, but that they are ON TIME!! Tests start each day at 8:30 am, so we will have just enough time for students to go to the bathroom, get a drink of water, and get settled before the test starts. If students come in late they will feel rushed and will perform poorly on their test. If they are late enough, they will have to make up their missed test on Friday. I promise you, students really hate having to make a test up on a later date.
Please send your students with a fully belly from a healthy breakfast, and a good night's sleep refreshing their bodies. We need them as focused as possible.
We are so proud of all the hard work of our wonderful students, and we are confident that they will demonstrate the evidence of a year of thoughtful, challenging work!
Send all your good thoughts our way tomorrow as we embark on the TCAP journey! :)
Thanks!!

March 18th - March 20th: Reading/Writing testing from 8:30 - 9:30
Based on those dates, we only have 10 more days of teaching until TCAP testing begins! Every minute of review that we can squeeze in is crucial, so please please PLEASE send in your student every day for the full day unless they are ACTUALLY sick. It is imperative that students are prepared for the tests, and that they are present on the day of the test. That being said here are some other reminders:
We are so confident in all of our brilliant little learners- thank you to parents who are helping their students demonstrate all of their knowledge!!

- Please ensure that your students are going to bed early so that they are coming to school well rested and prepared to test!
- Please send your student with a water bottle and snack each day so that they are as comfortable as possible in the testing environment.
- During testing situations NO TECHNOLOGY is allowed in the room (Computers and P-boards will be turned off) so NO CELLPHONES ALLOWED AT SCHOOL ON TESTING DAYS!! If a student is found to have had a cellphone in their desk during the test the test will be null and void and our school could owe thousands of dollars in penalties to the state.

Happy Valentine's Day!!
I hope you all had a magnificent Valentine's Day, and are enjoying your five day weekend! Remember, students don't return to school until Wednesday, February 19th! I have posted below some photos of our cookie decorating party. It seemed students had a blast! Also, a huge thank you to parents who brought your students to the Father-Daughter Mother-Son Dance on Thursday night! I know the students really enjoyed dancing, and spending a little quality time with all of the parents :)
Just as a reminder, TCAP is approaching rapidly!! While the testing schedule is not yet set, we are going to be testing often throughout the month of March. As TCAP is approaching we are doing a lot of review in every subject right now, and it is extremely important for students to attend every day unless the are really sick!! Our classes have had a HUGE number of absences lately. Now I know this is a time of year when many students do get sick, but we need to be doing everything we can as their supporters to keep them healthy and IN SCHOOL! If your student really is sick, please call in and excuse them from school so we know to prepare work to send home for them.
Have a lovely 5 day weekend, and wee'll be seeing students on Wednesday! :) There will be no spelling words this week since it's only a 3 day week!

Halloween Parties
Our annual Butler Elementary Halloween celebrations are soon to be here! A few reminders:

- Halloween parties will be the last 45 minutes of the school day on October 31st. All parents are welcome to attend, and are encouraged to bring some sweet treats to share!
- Please do not send your student to school in a really gory costume, or anything with a mask that covers their entire face. We need to know who is who, and we don't want to scare the little ones too much! :)
